According to Save the Children’s, Born into the Climate Crisis Report, climate and environmental threats, including disasters and disease outbreaks, are responsible for disruptions in the education of over 37 million children each year – this accounts for nearly half of the 75 million children and youth who will have their education disrupted due to an emergency or crisis.

At a COP27 side event that took place in Sharm El-Sheikh on 10 November 2022 together with participants online, Marc Fancy from Prudence Foundation joined representatives from Save the Children, Global Partnership for Education, Green Climate Fund and UNESCO in a discussion to discuss this pressing issue and highlight the Comprehensive School Safety Framework (CSSF) as an effective climate adaptation solution for education resilience.

Marc spoke online at a COP27 Save the Children event focusing on protecting education systems against the impact of climate change

“As a foundation, our main objective is to identify, support and develop viable solutions that address key societal issues and can deliver impact at scale. Our focus is on bringing safety and protection to as many people across our communities as possible through sustainable, long-term initiatives focused on education, health and safety”, Marc said. He went on to share Prudence Foundation’s experiences in supporting educational continuity and child safety through the Safe Schools programmes.

Together with Save the Children and the Department of Education in the Philippines, Prudence Foundation developed a nationwide Comprehensive Safe School Ecosystem and Disaster Risk Reduction Management Information System (DRRMIS) in the Phillippines as well as supported the Global Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience in the Education Sector (GADRRRES) in revising the Comprehensive School Safety Framework (CSSF) which will strengthen education systems to make schools safer for children and be protected from all-hazards, including the impact of climate change.

Education Safe

Prudence Foundation leveraged innovation, technology, and collaboration to create the DRRMIS together with the Philippines central government. The current ecosystem connects all 47,000 schools in the Philippines to allow a two-flow of information fundamentally around the CSSF.
